How to Get to Socotra Island: Flights, Visa & Travel Tips

After years of anticipation and planning, I am excited to share with you all I uncovered on my voyage, and I am prepared to answer all of the burning questions I had before setting foot on this enchanting island. Welcome to the journey of a lifetime!

preparing for the trip - more than just booking a ticket

Going to Socotra is not like any other trip. It is a real adventure that requires good planning and patience. Before you think about when to travel, there are fateful decisions that need to be made.

First: when to visit Socotra

From my experience, the period from October to May is the best of all. During these months, the weather is mild and pleasant, during the day the degrees reach 20-25 degrees Celsius. I was afraid of extreme heat, but I found the weather ideal for exploring and hiking.
The sea is also calm and peaceful, which makes it convenient for swimming and diving. You should avoid the period from June to September due to the strong monsoons that make the sea turbulent and may disrupt your travel plans.

Second: is Socotra safe

This question was my primary concern, and the answer is from my experience and from the available information: yes, Socotra is safe for travelers. Isolated from the conflicts on the Yemeni mainland, the island has its own stable reality.
My route was via a direct flight from Abu Dhabi to Socotra, which means that I did not pass through the Yemeni mainland at all. All the time I was there, I felt completely safe, the locals were very friendly and welcoming. However, as a Responsible Traveler, I always advise you to check the official travel reports of your country before planning any trip.

Third: visa: the magic key

You need a visa to enter Socotra (Yemen).

The process is simple, but it can not be done by yourself. A tourist company registered in Socotra must take care of the visa application on your behalf.

The process:you will provide the company with a copy of your passport, and you will receive the visa in a week to ten days.

The visa fee is USD 150 and is valid for 30 days. Upon arrival at Socotra airport, you will be handed the original copy of the visa.

the road to Socotra - the journey to another world

Here the real challenge begins. Getting to Socotra is half of the adventure.

The most basic and easiest way: direct flight from Abu Dhabi

This is the route I took and it is the safest and most reliable.
These flights are operated by Air Arabia Airlines, but you cannot book them yourself online.
The Socotra tourism company must make the reservation on your behalf.
  • Flight schedule (for the season 2025-2026):
    • Days: Tuesday and Friday (with the possibility of additional flights on Sundays during the high season).
    • Flight dates:
      • From Abu Dhabi (AUH) to Socotra (SCT): departure at 8:00 AM, Arrival at 9:30 am.
      • From Socotra (SCT) to Abu Dhabi (AUH): departure at 10:00 AM, Arrival at 11:15 am.
  • The cost of a round-trip ticket: about 930 USD for the season 2025-2026.
  • Flight duration: about an hour and a half.
  • Personal tip: due to limited seats, book 2-4 months in advance, especially if you plan to travel during the high season (November, February, March). I personally booked 3 months ago, and it was the right decision.

How to get to Socotra from different cities and regions

  • From Dubai or UAE: take a car or bus to Abu Dhabi (about an hour and a half from Dubai) and then drive from there. There are no direct flights from Dubai.
  • From India/ UK/ USA / Europe: first you will need to fly to Abu Dhabi. Many airlines offer flights to Abu Dhabi from major cities such as London, New York and Delhi. Plan an overnight stay in Abu Dhabi to make sure you don't miss your early Socotra flight the next morning.

Choosing your adventure-group or private trips

This is one of the most important decisions.
You cannot travel to Socotra alone as an independent tourist, you must be with a tour company.

Group excursions:

They are the most common and affordable option. You will join a group of travelers (usually 8-15 people) and share vehicles and a guide. It's a great opportunity to meet people from different cultures.
This was my experience, and being with a group of wonderful people added extra pleasure to the trip.

Special excursions:

If you want complete flexibility, travel with your family, or want to design your own program, this is the most suitable option. The cost is higher, but you get a crew dedicated only to you.

Sample trip costs (8 days / 7 nights):

  • Group trip: starts from USD 1200 per person.
  • Private trip: prices are higher and vary depending on the size of the group.

What does this cost usually cover:

  • Accommodation mostly camping in picturesque locations, and one or two nights in a hotel.
  • All meals prepared by a special chef during camping-and the food was delicious!.
  • All transportation within the island is by SUV (Land Cruiser).
  • Tour guide and support staff (driver, chef).
  • Entrance tickets to nature reserves and sites.
  • A boat trip to Shaub beach (if available in the program).

What is not covered by the cost:

  • International air ticket (about 930 USD).
  • Entry visa (150 US dollars).
  • Drone fees (USD 100, if you want to bring one).
  • Drinks and souvenirs.
  • Tipping (it is a recognized and deserved work).

inside the island-life in the bosom of nature

Money is king:

Remember this well:
there are no ATMs in Socotra, credit cards cannot be used. You must bring enough US dollar money to cover all personal expenses throughout your trip. Bring new, clean sheets, as torn or worn sheets may not be accepted. You can exchange dollars for Yemeni riyals at the market in Hadibo.

Accommodation: between simple hotels and real stars:

  • In Hadibo (the capital): there are simple hotels options. I advise you to stay away from luxurious expectations.
  • Camping: this is the spirit of the Socotra experience. You will sleep in tents under a starry sky in incredible locations such as dehamre beach or the arhal Coast.
  • The crew sets up the entire camp, including the kitchen and the occasional portable toilet. Waking up to the sound of the surf is an invaluable experience.

Food: simple and tasty dishes:

The private chef accompanying the group prepares fresh meals. We taste seafood, fresh fish, chicken, meat, as well as vegetables and fruits. Everything was tasty and saturated after a long day of exploration.

Internet and communication: an opportunity to disconnect from the world:

This is important:
the internet connection is very weak and intermittent outside the city of Hadibo.
You can buy a SIM card from "Yemen Mobile" or "Etisalat UAE" to get better service, but do not expect that it will work all over the island. I look at this as a blessing – it is a real opportunity to break away from digital noise and have a real connection with nature.

What to pack in your suitcase

  1. Comfortable clothes: cotton clothes for the daytime, a
  2. warm jacket for the evening (the mountains can be cold).
  3. Durable shoes for long walks. Do not consider stylish sneakers!
  4. Personal hygiene items (shampoo, soap, etc.).
  5. Strong sunscreen (SPF 50+), sunglasses, hat.
  6. Headlight (necessary for walking around the camp at night).
  7. Portable charger (power bank) is large – electricity is available only in the city.
  8. Your personal medications.
  9. Camera, additional memory, batteries – you will take a lot of photos!

Conclusion: why all the fuss

After all this planning, all these costs, all these preparations, you may be asking yourself:

is Socotra worth it?

I tell you and in all honesty: yes, and more. The price you pay, the effort you put in, turns into priceless memories. It's waking up under the brothers ' blood tree swimming in the turquoise waters of Lake "dehmari", walking on the white sand in the "skullcap", sitting around the fire under the stars in the "arhal", and the warm smiles of the locals.

Socotra is not just a tourist destination; it is a test of courage, a lesson in simplicity, a reminder that true beauty still exists in this world. It is an adventure that will change you, and will leave an indelible mark on your soul. Start your journey now. Get in touch with a reliable tour operator, let your dream be closer to you.
